acording to http://www.urmc.rochester.edu this is why...
It's kind of like twanging a rubber band. Air is pushed up from the lungs into the larynx, where it passes through a pair of vocal cords. The cords, like a plucked rubber band, vibrate, creating sounds that are amplified and shaped in your mouth and nasal cavities. The pitch of your voice has a lot to do with the size of your vocal cords, which are really flaps or folds of tissue. The thicker and longer the folds are, the lower the voice. On average, men's folds get as large as a quarter, while women's cords usually grow no larger than the size of a dime.
You may be wondering why I asked myself this question. Well today I was with Gerrit and he amazes me by how many different voices he can make! He has a voice for ever ethnicity. Ha. I wont get into that. But today he was singing/humming to a song in the car and it amazed me how different his voice could sound... I wish I would have been ablee to get recordings of this but their is no way he would have let me. So on my own I've come to the conclusion that Gerrit can make so many different kinds of sounds because
A) He's a boy and his vocal cords are bigger B) He's just a goof ball and C) Whatever it takes he can do so it annoys me to no end.
:) ha
