Red hair occurs naturally on approximately 1–2% of the human population.[1][2] It occurs more frequently (2–6%) in people of northern or western European ancestry, and less frequently in other populations. Red hair appears in people with two copies of a recessive gene on chromosome 16 which causes a mutation in the MC1R protein.
Red hair varies from a deep burgundy through burnt orange to bright copper. It is characterized by high levels of the reddish pigment pheomelanin and relatively low levels of the dark pigment eumelanin. The term redhead (originally redd hede) has been in use since at least 1510.[3] It is associated with fair skin color, lighter eye colors (gray, blue, green, and hazel), freckles, and sensitivity to ultraviolet light.[4]
Cultural reactions have varied from ridicule to admiration; many common stereotypes exist regarding redheads and they are often portrayed as fiery-tempered.
What inspired this blog may you ask? Well that is a good question and the only explication I can come up with is this: I have a friend who is a red head. In fact I have two friends that are red heads and I think that their hair color is interesting and unique.
The problem I fear with red heads is that their are so many stereo types that go along with it. Most of these stereotypes are negative. For example: Ginger, Fireball, Carrot Top, Red, and Rusty Knob, just to name a few, are hurtful nicknames! The question I am seeking to answer tonight is this: Why are Red Heads singled out more often than blonds or brunets?
The fact that there are so few red heads out there, I'm sure, contribute to the madness. In my opinion I think people are afraid of things that are different than them. Because of this attitude red heads get made fun off and pushed around more than others. Sadly there is no way to control this growing problem. The best solution I can come up with is this. If you are a red head don't let people get to you! Be strong and proud of your differences and on national kick a ginger day (November 20) if you know what's good for you... skip school!
